"My sculpture is created in wax, cast in bronze, and highly
finished with a wide variety of patinas. The current series
deal with the multiplicity of metaphors related to the Bird." Sharon Wandel
"The Lamp Pole Project, created by Matt Rink and Bland Hoke,
emphasizes creative re-use of decommissioned materials. The
spirals in "Eb & Flow" represent forty of one-hundred lamp
poles found overgrown in Alfred NY. This works to push the
idea of sustainability and the importance of up-cycling in the
arts".
Matt Rink was Sculpture Barn's Resident Artist 2007/08
I often work on a series of sculptures inspired by plant
forms found in nature on my property here at Sculpture
Barn.
My most recent series of pieces, the Unfurlings are
inspired by young ferns. My intention is to capture the
rhythm of their metamorphosis with my forms rather than
depict them realistically.
"Working primarily in steel, I employ a certain amount of energy
in the way I define my shapes, and that varies as I increase the
scale.
With my large seed forms, they open, reach out, and grow
quickly. Particularly inspiring are the stem structures …
elongated, narrow, delicate, finally overpowered by the seed
masses they support.."
